Weekend seminar on working with dreams in psychodrama
Karlstad 22-24/9 2023

Not finding out what the dreams want to tell you is like not opening an important letter

Our nightly dreams are personal and invite us into an imaginary and surreal world, where the conscious self no longer exercises all control. In this seminar you are invited to playfully step into the world of dreams and explore its secrets. With the help of the group and the director/group leader, you get the opportunity to dramatize and play out dreams in an improvised form.

Working with dreams in psychodrama

Dreams have fascinated people for thousands of years. In ancient times, dreams were regarded as a message from the gods. In ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, dream reading and interpretation were common and dream interpretation has also been used for therapeutic purposes.

In psychodrama we do not interpret the dreams but work with them and their symbols as they appear in the dream. We consider the dream world as a reality and portray and explore its enigmatic nature in order to understand the images as something that gives meaning and new perspectives to our lives. The focus of our work is always on action – design.

On the psychodrama stage, as in the world of dreams, there is no distinction between subject and object or inner and outer. We do not try to reproduce the original dream, but shape and develop it, amplify the dream figures and allow them to be expressed. We create a spontaneous game with the dream as a starting point.

During the weekend we will both work with the dreams that you have with you and the dreams that come up during the weekend. There are no requirements whatsoever for previous experience with psychodrama. All you need is curiosity.

About psychodrama

Psychodrama is used as a method in personal development, guidance and for therapeutic purposes. Psychodrama has cognitive and behavioral elements – you can e.g. practicing in different situations and both by participating in one’s own and other people’s dramas one can develop new sides, increase one’s “role repertoire”. The focus is on developing resources and thereby increasing one’s competence to handle different situations.

Psychodrama is usually used in groups and is a form of group therapy but has much in common with artistic therapies. At the same time, psychodrama is unlike anything else. Dr JL Moreno (1889 – 1974) was the founder of psychodrama. He emphasized the genuine equal meeting. His philosophy of creativity and spontaneity and role theory underlies the psychodramatic method.

Psychodrama has its roots in the theatre, and mainly improvisational theatre. On the psychodrama stage, the main character’s (protagonist’s) questions are staged with the help of the leader (director) and other participants (auxiliary self). Together, a drama is created without ready-made lines and where the plot develops in the moment.

The dramas can be about realistic situations, dreams or fantasies. Because psychodrama involves activity, the body, emotions and all the senses are engaged so that the experience together with cognitive anchoring becomes a powerful learning moment. Everything happens “here and now”, which means that the logic of the self dissolves so that one does not distinguish between the past, the present and the future. Role reversal is a fundamental instrument in psychodrama, and looking at oneself through other people’s eyes and experiencing situations from perspectives other than one’s own is something that increases understanding both for oneself and for others. Psychodrama takes a stand for humanistic values, for the need to consider existential questions and last but not least the healing power of humor.
